What’s the Deal?: Depending on what you went into the new blockbuster Transformers movie expecting, whether it be a ridiculously loud, rock ‘em sock ‘em robot battle fest, or a movie with an understandable plot and at least half-decent dialogue with interesting characters, it either delivered on all aspects or was a colossal mess. Fortunately, I went into Michael Bay’s newest reason for things to explode with an open mind – a mind ready to be filled with over-the-top action and massive explosions.
With that in mind, as I said before, this movie is loud. Luckily, as I’m sure Michael Bay intended, I went to go see this in IMAX, so for a good 2 hours and change, I was treated to action sequences taken to 11. Giant robots are torn apart, entire aircraft carriers are destroyed, and the Egyptian desert is riddled with missile blasts and craters. Shia LeBouf reprises his role as Sam Witwicky, who, along with Optimus Prime and the rest of his Transformer gang, uncover the existence of a once-dormant Decepticon group called The Fallen, who have recently risen to destroy the world. Why now, we don’t know. On the script side, when not spouting out sub-par dialogue, both Sam and his sort-of girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox) spend the majority of the film either screaming or running.

The film literally starts off with a bang, and after a brief stint with Sam going to college, we’re thrown back into the action and it never lets up from there. The CGI is great, but the actual human/robot physical interaction is a bit spotty. The sound design is, as expected, great, loud, and frequent. The excellent desert sequence near the end is very reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan, of course, if that movie had been filled to the brim with gigantic fighting robots. If you went in hoping for a cohesive storyline and all that jazz, unfortunately you’re out of luck. Plot holes abound and, really, nothing makes sense or is explained well enough in the movie. You leave the theater with more questions than answers, along with an increased heartbeat.
Closing Comments: With all its (numerous) faults, the film certainly delivers on the action aspect and has “summer movie” written all over it.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen gets … 7.0 out of 10.
