The Bucket List Movie Review
By Andrew Yuan
Who’s in it?: Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman
The Basics:
Two grumpy old men team up for one final hurrah before they “kick the bucket.” Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) and Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) are two terminally-ill cancer patients who wind up in the same hospital room in a hospital owned by Edward. The two characters are polar opposites. Cole is a pessimistic, detached-from-family millionaire and Chambers is a highly intelligent but run-of-the-mill mechanic with a loving wife of 45 years and children. Somehow neither has lived their life to the fullest. They go through a ridiculous adventure as they attempt complete a list of things to do before death. What starts as a philosophical exercise turns into a wild experience of a lifetime.
What’s the Deal?:
The movie is a comedy with serious tones. The movie is very sentimental. Nicholson and Freeman really create two bold characters each with a distinct personality. You will find yourself laughing or maybe you will find yourself crying. You might even find yourself doing both at the same time. Either way the movie is entertaining.
What’s Bad:
The movie is cliché and predictable at times but it doesn’t detract too much from the experience. Sometimes you just know what to expect but it still works.
Closing Comments:
The movie appeals to a wide audience from teens to adults. Is it in the running for one of the top movies of all time? No. But it does make a great rental now that it is on DVD. It will keep you occupied and entertained for a good hour and 37 minutes. If you are a hater of sappiness you may groan at the few sappy moments but the movie is still very worthwhile.
The Bucket List gets …7.5 out of 10.
