District 9 Movie Review
by Adam K.
Who’s in it?: Nobody really famous but here are a few of the main characters: Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Nathalie Boltt, Sylvaine Strike.
What’s the Deal?: The latest Sci-Fi movie to grace the movie screens is the groundbreaking District 9, directed by Niell Blomkamp, the guy who was given the reins to direct the Halo movie before production fell through. For a movie shot on a paltry $30 million budget, District 9 really shines as one of the most intelligent movies of the past decade, and a breath of fresh air the sci-fi genre really needed.

The Basics: The movie stars, well, nobody really, as a genius move to hire complete nobodies really pays off. Sharlto Copley is the lead in the movie, as Wikus Van De Merwe, the innocent, disillusioned MNU (Multi-National United) employee put in charge of relocating the colony of aliens (derogatorily dubbed “prawns” for their crustacean appearance) that have been living in the slum-like conditions of District 9, a ramshackle camp set up to segregate the aliens from the human population after their ship breaks down over Johannesburg, South Africa.
Before long, the mistreated aliens cause a ruckus and things get out of hand quickly. Over the course of the rest of the film, Wikus learns of MNU’s mistreatment of the prawns and through something I won’t spoil, joins up with one alien, Christopher Johnson, to try and help the colony get back and repair their spaceship.
Closing Comments: For a movie with a small budget like this one, the effects are really top-notch and very impressive. A lot of really amazing action sequences fill the second half of the film and it never lets up. It’s a bit violent for the young ones (people exploding and whatnot) and filled with a fair bit of profanity, but if you can stomach all that, you’ll love the great acting, script, and the message that the film brings, and that’s not something you can say about a lot of movies these days. Hopefully this film is at least nominated for a Best Picture nominee.
District 9 gets ... 9.5 out of 10.
