What’s the deal? Cloverfield is about an alien or some sort of monster that appears in the heart of New York City and terrorizes the city and its people. The story focuses on Hudson (often just called “Hud”) and his best friend Rob. The story begins when Hudson decides to throw a surprise going-away party for Rob because he is moving to Japan to work for a major corporation. Hudson videotapes the entire party so that he can give the tape to Rob as a reminder of his time living in New York. The party turns into a large scene of panic when the ground shakes, buildings collapse, and fire spreads across New York as the strange monster begins to attack the city. Rob, Hud, and two other girls from the party try to stay alive and save Rob’s girlfriend from the monster.
What’s Unique? The most unique aspect of the movie was the camera angle that they decided to film the movie in. The movie is shot entirely from Hud’s camera and remains in first-person view throughout the entire movie. Hud constantly says, “ I need to film. People need to know what happened tonight,” while trying to escape death.
Sounds good, how was it? In all honesty, the movie was a complete failure and very boring. The camera angle was supposed to be something new and unique but it turned out to just be more annoying. For the most part the movie’s lighting was way too dark to be able to see anything. And the camera was purposely very shaky to simulate a real person filming on a hand held device, but it just made viewers dizzy and frustrated. The movie was both cliché and very predictable. Cloverfield is your typical “monster running loose in New York” movie. Haven’t there already been enough of those?
Should I even bother seeing it? Not really, why don’t you just watch Godzilla again?
Cloverfield gets a 3 out of 10.
